The town lies on the banks of the world famous Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal, a waterway built and expanded over 1000 years before the invention of railroads to facilitate trade and culture between the southern and the northern regions of China. A UNESCO world heritage site, Wuzhen water town has never changed its name or lifestyle. Traditional residential houses, workshop, stores, arch bridge, arched gate across the street, river banks, and verandas all are well preserved. Most of the buildings were built during the 14th century Ming dynasty.

Over 7000 years in history, Wuzhen Water Town perfectly maintains the former style and features of ancient water town. Some of ancient houses beside the river were built on pillars to lift them above the surface of the waterway forming a water pavilion architectural feature, which is considered the part of original architecture of Wuzhen. There are windows on the three sides of this feature, opposite the waterway, through which people can have a wonderful view of the watery scenery. Within the town, there are West village, mainly for tourist accommodation and best seen at night, and the East village, mainly for tourism. There are all kinds of inns and hotels here.
